What Is a Chocolate Cake Donut? And How It Differs from Chocolate Iced

1 October 2026 · 4 min read

A chocolate cake donut is a cake donut with cocoa in the batter — not a raised donut with chocolate on the outside. That one distinction is the whole reason people order the wrong thing. If you want chocolate through the donut, this is the one. If you want chocolate on the donut, you want something else on our board.

Cake, not raised

Donuts split into two families. Raised donuts are yeasted dough — they prove, fill with air, and fry light and nearly hollow. A traditional glazed is the reference example. Cake donuts are batter, leavened with baking powder instead of yeast, and the result is tight-crumbed and tender, closer to a pound cake than to bread. The longer version of that distinction is in glazed, cake or old fashioned.

Chocolate cake sits in the second camp. The cocoa goes into the batter before frying, so the colour and the flavour run all the way through the crumb. Break one in half and it is dark in the middle.

What it is not

Three different things on our board have the word chocolate attached, and they are not interchangeable:

If you order…You getEachDozen
Chocolate cake donutCocoa in the batter. Dark all the way through, dense, tender.$2.50$25.00
Chocolate icedA raised donut — light and airy — with chocolate icing on top. Plain inside.$2.25$22.50
Long John — ChocolateA raised bar, chocolate iced, from the specialty board.$2.75$27.50

So the chocolate cake donut is the only one of the three where the chocolate is in the donut. The other two are chocolate on the outside of a plain raised donut. Neither is wrong — they are just different orders, and the counter cannot tell which one you meant.

Where it sits on the cake board

Four cake donuts, all the same price:

Cake donutWhat it tastes likeEachDozen
Old fashionedFaintly tangy, cracked surface, the crispest edge of the four.$2.50$25.00
Buttermilk cakeTangier than the old fashioned, softer edge.$2.50$25.00
Blueberry cakeFruit-led, the least sweet donut in the case.$2.50$25.00
Chocolate cakeThe most sweet of the four, and the most dessert-like.$2.50$25.00

If you are ordering a mixed dozen and want range rather than four of the same thing, blueberry and chocolate are the two ends of the cake board — least sweet and most sweet. The old fashioned is the reference point in between.

What the dozen actually costs

$25.00, and the arithmetic is not a discount code — every dozen at The Donut Run is buy ten, get two free, so a cake dozen is ten donuts at $2.50 and two more in the box. The same rule runs across the board: a glazed dozen is $15.00 and a specialty dozen is $27.50. Custom decorated donuts are the one thing the dozen deal does not cover — those stay at $3.00 each.

One practical reason to pick a cake donut

It keeps. There is no delicate yeast structure to collapse, so a cake donut is still good several hours after it was fried, where a raised glazed is noticeably past its best. If you are buying at 7:00am for an 11:00am meeting, the cake board is the safer half of the box.

Where to buy one

Three shops, every one of them open at 5:00am, everything fried that morning:

Closing times differ by shop and by day, so take them from the location pages rather than from here. Half off after 2:00pm Monday through Thursday runs at Spanish Fork and St. George — Ogden does not run it.

Any single donut can be gone before the day is out, so if a chocolate cake is specifically what you came for it is worth ringing ahead. Every item we make, with what it actually is, is on the Utah Donut Index. Nothing we make is gluten free, and all of our donuts contain dairy, wheat and egg — the allergen page is the honest version of that answer.

Common questions

What is a chocolate cake donut?

It is a cake donut with cocoa mixed into the batter before frying. Cake donuts are batter rather than yeasted dough and are leavened with baking powder, so the crumb is dense and tender rather than airy. Because the cocoa is in the batter, a chocolate cake donut is dark all the way through rather than only on top.

Is a chocolate cake donut the same as a chocolate iced donut?

No, and this is the most common mix-up. A chocolate iced donut is a raised donut — light and airy — with chocolate icing on the outside and plain dough inside, and it is $2.25. A chocolate cake donut has the chocolate through the whole crumb and is $2.50. A Long John — Chocolate is a third thing again: a raised bar with chocolate icing, from the specialty board at $2.75.

How much is a chocolate cake donut at The Donut Run?

$2.50 each, or $25.00 a dozen. Every dozen at The Donut Run is buy ten, get two free, which is where the $25.00 comes from: ten donuts at $2.50 with two more in the box. The whole cake board — old fashioned, buttermilk cake, blueberry cake and chocolate cake — is the same price.

Which cake donut is the sweetest?

The chocolate. Blueberry is the least sweet thing on our cake board because the fruit brings acidity that cuts the sugar, and chocolate is at the other end. The old fashioned sits in between and is the usual reference point if you have never had a cake donut.

Do cake donuts keep better than raised donuts?

Yes. There is no delicate yeast structure to collapse, so a cake donut is still good several hours after frying where a raised glazed is noticeably past its best. If you are buying early for a late-morning meeting, the cake board is the safer half of the box.

Where can I buy one, and what time?

All three shops — Spanish Fork at 1306 E Center St, Ogden at 554 Washington Blvd, and St. George at 922 E Brigham Rd — open at 5:00am, and everything is fried that morning. Closing times differ by shop and by day, so check the location page. Half off after 2:00pm Monday through Thursday runs at Spanish Fork and St. George; Ogden does not run it.
