What Is a Blueberry Cake Donut? And Where to Get One in Utah
30 September 2026 · 4 min read
A blueberry cake donut is a cake donut, not a raised one — and it is the least sweet thing on our board. The fruit brings acidity, the acidity cuts the sugar, and what you are left with tastes more like a breakfast than like a dessert. If you are the person who says they do not really like donuts, start here.
Cake, not raised
Donuts split into two families. Raised donuts are yeasted dough — they prove, fill with air, and fry light and nearly hollow. A traditional glazed is the reference example. Cake donuts are batter, leavened with baking powder instead of yeast, and the result is tight-crumbed and tender, closer to a pound cake than to bread.
Blueberry sits in the second camp, with the flavour carried through the whole crumb rather than sitting in a pocket in the middle. There is a longer version of that distinction in glazed, cake or old fashioned, and the buttermilk bar page covers the same family in bar form.
The cake board, and what each one is for
| Cake donut | What it tastes like | Each | Dozen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Old fashioned | Faintly tangy, cracked surface, the most crisp edge of the four | $2.50 | $25.00 |
| Buttermilk cake | The same tang, smoother surface, softer all the way through | $2.50 | $25.00 |
| Blueberry cake | Fruit-led and the least sweet on the board | $2.50 | $25.00 |
| Chocolate cake | The most sweet of the four, and the one children pick | $2.50 | $25.00 |
All four are $2.50 each and $25.00 a dozen, and a dozen here means buy ten, get two free — which is where the $25.00 comes from, ten at $2.50 rather than twelve.
Blueberry cake is not a blueberry filled donut
Worth saying plainly, because people order one meaning the other. A filled donut is raised dough with preserve injected after frying: the fruit is a pocket, the dough around it is plain and sweet. A blueberry cake donut has no filling and no pocket. The flavour is in the batter, so every bite is the same bite. If what you actually want is fruit in the middle, order a Bismark — ours come lemon and raspberry.
The one thing we are not going to guess at
People ask what is in the batter — whether the blueberry is fruit, purée, or flavouring. We are not going to answer that from memory and be wrong about it. If it matters to you, and especially if it matters for an allergy, ask at the counter before you buy, and read the honest answer on what is in ours first. Guessing at an ingredient in print is not a service to anybody.
Buy it for later, not just for now
The practical advantage of any cake donut is that it holds. There is no fragile air structure to go flat, so a blueberry cake donut is still good at two in the afternoon in a way a raised glazed simply is not. If you are buying donuts in the morning for a meeting at eleven, or for a drive, the cake board is the part of the case to look at. The road-trip guide makes the same argument at length.
Where to get one
All three shops, and everything is fried that morning starting at 5:00am.
- Spanish Fork — 1306 E Center St, Spanish Fork, UT 84660 · (801) 416-0800. About fifteen minutes south of Provo, in Utah County.
- Ogden — 554 Washington Blvd.
- St. George — 922 E Brigham Rd.
Closing times differ by shop and by day, so take them from the location pages rather than from here. Half off after 2:00pm Monday through Thursday runs at Spanish Fork and St. George — Ogden does not run it.
Any single donut can be gone before the day is out, so if a blueberry cake is specifically what you came for it is worth ringing ahead. Every item we make, with what it actually is, is on the Utah Donut Index.
Common questions
What is a blueberry cake donut?
It is a cake donut flavoured with blueberry. Cake donuts are batter rather than yeasted dough and are leavened chemically, so the crumb is dense and tender rather than airy — closer to a pound cake than to bread. The blueberry version is the least sugar-forward donut on our board, because the fruit brings acidity that cuts the sweetness.
Is a blueberry cake donut the same as a blueberry filled donut?
No. A filled donut is raised yeast dough with fruit preserve injected after frying, so the fruit sits in a pocket in the middle. A blueberry cake donut has the flavour through the whole crumb and no filling at all. If you want a pocket of fruit, order a Bismark — ours come lemon and raspberry.
How much is a blueberry cake donut at The Donut Run?
$2.50 each, or $25.00 a dozen. Every dozen at The Donut Run is buy ten, get two free, which is exactly where the $25.00 comes from: ten donuts at $2.50. The rest of the cake board — old fashioned, buttermilk cake and chocolate cake — is the same price.
Which cake donut should I order first?
If you have never had one, order the old fashioned — it is the reference point for the whole family and it has the most crisp edge. Order the blueberry if you want the least sweet donut in the case, and the chocolate if you want the most.
Do cake donuts keep better than raised donuts?
Yes. There is no delicate yeast structure to collapse, so a cake donut is still good several hours after it was fried, where a raised glazed is noticeably past its best. That is the practical reason to pick one if you are buying for later in the day rather than for right now.
What time can I buy one?
Every shop opens at 5:00am and everything is fried that morning. Closing times differ by shop and by day — the location pages carry the current hours. Half off after 2:00pm Monday through Thursday runs at Spanish Fork and St. George; Ogden does not run it.
