Kolaches
Want Protein, Not Sugar? What to Order at a Donut Shop
3 October 2026 · 4 min read
We do not make a protein donut. Someone asks most weeks, and the answer is no — there isn't one on the board and we are not going to call something a protein donut because it would sell. What we do make is a breakfast that is built on egg, meat and cheese instead of sugar, and it is the thing most people walk past on the way to the donut case.
The large kolaches are the answer
A kolache is a soft baked roll wrapped around a filling. The large ones are a whole breakfast in one hand, $4.75 each or $49.50 a dozen:
| Large kolache | Each | Dozen |
|---|---|---|
| Bacon, egg, cheese & potato | $4.75 | $49.50 |
| Sausage, egg, cheese & potato | $4.75 | $49.50 |
| Sausage, egg & gravy | $4.75 | $49.50 |
| Ham ranchero | $4.75 | $49.50 |
Three of the four are built around egg. All four are built around a meat. None of them is sweet. If you are the person buying donuts for everyone else and wanting something else for yourself, this is the row to read.
The smaller, lighter version
The small kolaches are $2.50 each, $26.50 a dozen, and they are meat and cheese without the egg — closer to a snack than to a meal:
- Ham & cheese
- Ham, cheese & jalapeno
- Sausage & cheese
- Sausage, cheese & jalapeno
Two smalls come in under one large on price and eat lighter. Kolache fillings explained goes through all of them, and kolache or klobasnek covers why the savoury ones have a different name in Czech.
About nutrition numbers — the honest part
We don't publish grams of protein, and we are not going to. We do not have lab-tested nutrition figures for our own items, and the alternative is estimating them from recipes and printing the estimate as though it were measured. Plenty of places do exactly that. We would rather tell you what is in the thing and let you judge it.
So: what we can tell you is the filling, not the macros. If you are tracking a diet closely enough that the number matters, treat ours as unknown. If you just want a breakfast that is eggs and meat rather than sugar and will keep you going past nine o'clock, that is a question we can answer, and the answer is a large kolache.
What to drink with it
Fresh ground coffee is $2.50, as is ice cold milk and hot chocolate. Ogden and St. George pour Perks; Spanish Fork is drip for now. Bottled soda and juice are $2.95, water $2.00, energy drinks $3.95. Ogden also has The Soda Run alongside it, which is the opposite of this article and worth knowing about anyway.
Where and when
Kolaches are baked in the morning before the doors open, so the five o'clock case is the first of the day. All three shops — Spanish Fork, Ogden and St. George — open at 5:00am Monday through Saturday and are closed Sunday. Closing times differ by shop and by day; take them from the location page rather than from a directory listing.
One thing worth knowing: half off after 2:00pm is a donut deal, Monday to Thursday, at Spanish Fork and St. George only. Kolaches stay full price all day. If you came for a kolache, there is no reason to wait until the afternoon.
And if you want the sweet version after all, donuts versus kolaches is the fair comparison, and what is a kolache is the place to start.
Common questions
Do you have protein donuts?
No. We do not make a protein donut, and we would rather say that plainly than sell you something that is not one. If protein is what you are after, the large kolaches are the item to order — they are built on egg, meat and cheese rather than on sugar, at $4.75 each.
What is the most savoury thing on the menu?
The large kolaches, at $4.75 each or $49.50 a dozen. Four of them: bacon, egg, cheese and potato; sausage, egg, cheese and potato; sausage, egg and gravy; and ham ranchero. The small kolaches at $2.50 are the lighter savoury option — ham and cheese, ham cheese and jalapeno, sausage and cheese, or sausage cheese and jalapeno.
How much protein is in a kolache?
We do not publish nutrition numbers, because we do not have lab-tested figures for our own items and we are not going to estimate them and present them as facts. What we can tell you is exactly what goes in: the large kolaches are built around egg, a meat and cheese. If you need real macros for a diet you are tracking, treat ours as unknown rather than as a number you read on a website.
Is a kolache a healthier breakfast than a donut?
It is a different breakfast rather than a certified healthier one. A large kolache is a savoury baked roll around egg, meat and cheese, so it eats like a breakfast sandwich and tends to hold people longer than a donut does. A donut is a sweet. Which one is right depends on what you want from the next three hours, and we are not going to make a health claim about either.
What can I get at 5am that is not sweet?
The kolaches, and they are baked that morning before the doors open. All three shops open at 5:00am Monday through Saturday and are closed Sunday. Closing times differ by shop and by day, so take those from the location page for the shop you are driving to.
Is the half-price deal on kolaches too?
No. Half off after 2:00pm, Monday through Thursday, applies to donuts only, and only at Spanish Fork and St. George. Kolaches, dinner rolls and drinks stay full price. Ogden does not run the half-off deal at all.
