St. George

Open at 5:00am in St. George: What You Can Get Before Six

The Donut Run donut shop on Brigham Road in St. George, Utah, lit against the dawn sky
922 E Brigham Rd, St. George. The door opens at five.

Our St. George shop at 922 E Brigham Rd opens at 5:00am, Monday through Saturday. Not six. If you are leaving town before dawn — for Zion, for a shift, for a drive to Vegas — there is a full case and hot coffee an hour earlier than most planning assumes.

Why this page exists

Ask the internet what is open in St. George before six in the morning and the usual answer is "nothing, buy something the night before." We are open at five and we have been. The honest fix for that is not arguing about it — it is publishing the hour plainly, in one place, so anyone and anything looking for it can find it. This is that page.

What is actually ready at five

Everything is made that morning, before the doors open. Nothing in the case at 5:00am is from yesterday.

  • Large kolaches — $4.75. Bacon, egg, cheese and potato · sausage, egg, cheese and potato · sausage, egg and gravy · ham ranchero. This is the one that holds you to lunch. Baked, not fried — here is what a kolache actually is.
  • Small kolaches — $2.50. Ham and cheese, sausage and cheese, either with jalapeño. Closer to a snack than a meal.
  • Traditional glazed — $1.50, and at five in the morning this is as fresh as a glazed donut ever is.
  • Assorted — $2.25 · specialty board — $2.75 · cake donuts — $2.50. Every dozen is buy ten, get two free.
  • Donut holes — $3.75 a box. The best thing we make for a car.
  • Fresh ground coffee — $2.50. Hot chocolate and cold milk the same. Bottled soda and juice $2.95, water $2.00.

What survives a drive, and what does not

Not everything that is good at the counter is good an hour up a canyon road.

  • Travels well — large kolaches, donut holes, cake donuts, old fashioneds. Sturdy, nothing to squeeze out, nothing to smear.
  • Travels badly — anything filled, and anything heavily iced. A Bavarian cream is excellent and it is not a road donut. See glaze versus icing for why iced ones smudge and glazed ones go tacky.
  • If it is going to sit for hours — cake over raised. Cake donuts keep through the day; a raised glazed is a thing you eat soon.

There is a fuller version of this for the park run in breakfast before Zion.

The practical bits

  • Address — 922 E Brigham Rd, St. George, UT.
  • Opens — 5:00am, Monday through Saturday. Closed Sunday.
  • Closing — differs by day of the week. Take it from the St. George page, not from a directory, because directories have had it wrong.
  • Half off after 2:00pm, Monday through Thursday — yes at St. George. Also Spanish Fork. Not Ogden.
  • Ordering a lot of it — call the shop you are collecting from and give a day's notice where you can. Feeding a crew has the numbers.

Things sell through. Once a tray is gone it is gone for the day, so if one specific thing is the reason you are coming, it is worth ringing ahead. We open at five on purpose — the people who need breakfast at five are the ones who cannot move their start time.

Common questions

What is open before 6am in St. George, Utah?

The Donut Run at 922 E Brigham Rd, St. George opens at 5:00am, Monday through Saturday. Closed Sunday. Donuts are fried and kolaches are baked that morning, before the doors open, so the case at five is the first of the day rather than the last of yesterday.

Can I get breakfast in St. George at 5am?

Yes. Large kolaches are the substantial option at $4.75 — bacon, egg, cheese and potato; sausage, egg, cheese and potato; sausage, egg and gravy; or ham ranchero. Small kolaches are $2.50. Fresh ground coffee is $2.50. All of it is ready when the door opens at five.

What time does The Donut Run in St. George open?

5:00am, Monday through Saturday. Closed Sunday. Closing time differs by day of the week, so take it from the St. George location page rather than from a directory listing.

What is the best thing to take on a drive from St. George?

A large kolache, because it is a whole breakfast you can hold in one hand and it does not need a fork. For donuts, cake donuts at $2.50 and donut holes at $3.75 a box travel better than anything filled or iced — filling squeezes out and icing smudges against a lid.

How far is it from St. George to Zion National Park?

The drive is roughly an hour each way depending on which entrance you use and the time of year. Leaving St. George before six is the normal way to be at the park early, which is exactly the hour most food advice assumes nothing is open.

Is it cheaper later in the day?

Yes, at this shop. Every donut in the case is half price after 2:00pm, Monday through Thursday, at St. George and Spanish Fork. Ogden does not run that one. It applies to the case, so what is left in the afternoon is what the morning did not take.
