The Jalapeno Kolache: Utah's Most Overlooked $2.50 Breakfast
5 October 2026 · 5 min read

The thing our customers talk about most is not a donut. Across our Google listings the most-mentioned item on the menu is the kolache, and the savoury ones are the reason. The sausage, cheese and jalapeno is $2.50, it is baked rather than fried, and it is ready at five in the morning at all three shops.
What it actually is
A kolache is enriched yeast dough — soft, slightly sweet, closer to a dinner roll than to anything in the fryer — wrapped completely around a filling and baked. Nothing about it is fried. That is the whole difference between the two halves of our board, and it is covered properly in what is a kolache.
Strictly speaking, a savoury one is a klobasnek rather than a kolache. Nobody in Utah orders it that way, including us, but the distinction is real and worth two minutes if you like knowing what you are eating.
The two with jalapeno in them
| Kolache | Each | Dozen |
|---|---|---|
| Sausage, Cheese & Jalapeno | $2.50 | $26.50 |
| Ham, Cheese & Jalapeno | $2.50 | $26.50 |
| Sausage & Cheese | $2.50 | $26.50 |
| Ham & Cheese | $2.50 | $26.50 |
Same price across all four, jalapeno or not. If you want the full filling list rather than just the savoury end of it, kolache fillings explained has it.
Why this is the one we keep hearing about
When we went through what customers write, the pattern was consistent enough to be worth publishing: people arrive for donuts and leave talking about the savoury pastry. On our largest listing, kolaches were mentioned more often than every donut term on the list put together. The whole breakdown, with the numbers and where they came from, is in what 1,295 customer reviews actually say.
The honest read on that is not that our donuts are the weak part. It is that a donut is what people expect from a donut shop, and a hot sausage-and-jalapeno pastry at 5:15 in the morning is not — so that is the one they tell someone about.
Breakfast, not dessert
This is the part that gets missed. A kolache is a meal. Meat, cheese and bread, roughly the price of a coffee, eaten with one hand. If you have driven past a donut shop at six in the morning assuming there was nothing in there but sugar, that is the misunderstanding this page exists to clear up — and donuts versus kolaches is the fair side-by-side.
When to come
Every shop opens at 5:00am, Monday through Saturday, and is closed Sunday. Kolaches go into the oven with the first trays and sell at the counter until they are gone, which on a good morning is well before closing. There is no secret to it: the earlier you come, the more of the board is still there.
Closing times differ by shop and by day, so take them from the shop you are actually heading to — Spanish Fork, Ogden or St. George — rather than from a directory listing.
One thing we are not going to tell you
How hot it is. We have never measured it and we are not going to publish a number we made up, which would be the easiest thing on this page to invent. It is jalapeno, baked into the filling, in the quantity our kitchen puts there. If that is not what you want, the plain sausage and cheese is the same $2.50 and the same morning bake.
Common questions
What is a jalapeno kolache?
A soft enriched yeast dough closed around a savoury filling and baked, not fried. Ours come two ways with jalapeno in them: sausage, cheese and jalapeno, and ham, cheese and jalapeno. The jalapeno is inside with the meat and cheese, baked in, not spooned on after.
How much is a jalapeno kolache at The Donut Run?
$2.50 each, or $26.50 a dozen. That is the same price as the plain ham and cheese and the plain sausage and cheese — the jalapeno does not cost extra.
How spicy is it?
We have not put a heat rating on it and we would be guessing if we did. What we can tell you is what is in it: jalapeno baked into the filling alongside the meat and the cheese. If you want it without, order the ham and cheese or the sausage and cheese instead.
Which shops have jalapeno kolaches?
All three — Spanish Fork, Ogden and St. George. They are baked with the first trays of the morning at each shop and sold at the counter until they run out.
Do I need to order kolaches ahead?
Not for one or two. They are baked fresh each morning and sold until they are gone, so earlier is better. For a dozen or more, or for a crew, call the day before — a large order is a morning's production, not something that can be pulled out of a drawer.
Are kolaches half price after 2:00pm?
No. Half off after 2:00pm is a donut deal, Monday through Thursday, at Spanish Fork and St. George only. Kolaches stay full price all day at every shop. If you came for a kolache there is no reason to wait until the afternoon.
