Thanksgiving Dinner Rolls in Utah: Baked or Frozen, and How Many to Order

We make dinner rolls by the dozen: $6.95 baked and ready to eat, or $4.95 frozen so you can bake them at home and put them on the table hot. For Thanksgiving, order at least a week ahead, and count on two to three rolls per person.
Baked or frozen — a real decision, not an upsell
Frozen ($4.95 a dozen) is what most people should buy for a holiday meal. You bake them in your own oven while the turkey rests, and they hit the table hot. It is cheaper, and it is better — a roll straight from the oven is not the same object as a roll that has been sitting in a bag for four hours.
Baked ($6.95 a dozen) is for when you have no oven space, no time, or you are taking them somewhere. Also the right answer for an office lunch or a potluck where nobody is cooking.
The honest version: if your oven is already fighting a turkey, two casseroles and a pie, buy them baked. Oven space on Thanksgiving is the scarcest thing in the house.
How many rolls per person
- Two per person if there is a lot of other food. This is most Thanksgivings.
- Three per person if rolls are a feature — if people at your table build little turkey sandwiches on day one rather than waiting for leftovers.
- Add a dozen if anyone is taking leftovers home. Rolls are the first thing that runs out at the leftover stage and the thing people miss most.
For twelve people, three dozen is comfortable. For twenty, five.
When to order
A week ahead for Thanksgiving week. Our shops bake through the morning and there is only so much oven, so the last few days before the holiday are the constraint. Ordering early is the difference between getting what you want and taking what is left.
For an ordinary week, a day or two is plenty.
Why a donut shop makes good rolls
Because it is the same craft. A kolache is an enriched dough — milk, butter, egg — baked around a savoury filling, and we make those from scratch every morning. Dinner rolls are that same enriched dough tradition without the filling. A shop that can produce soft, slightly sweet kolache dough at four in the morning can produce a good dinner roll.
