What Is Dirty Soda? Utah's Strangest, Best Drink Order, Explained

If you did not grow up in Utah, dirty soda takes a minute to explain and about one sip to understand. It is a fountain soda with cream and flavoured syrup stirred through it, usually over pebble ice, usually enormous.
The basic idea
Take a soda — classically a cola, but lemon-lime and root beer work too. Add a splash of half and half or coconut cream. Add a pump or two of flavoured syrup: coconut, vanilla, lime, raspberry, peach. Stir. The cream softens the carbonation and rounds off the acidity, and what you get is closer to a float than a soft drink.
Why Utah
Utah has a large population that does not drink coffee, and a mid-afternoon slump is a universal human condition. Dirty soda filled that gap — a cold, sweet, slightly ceremonial drink you go out to get, the way other places go out for an espresso. Drive-through soda counters became their own category here in a way they have not anywhere else.
Where to start
If it is your first one:
- Coconut and lime over cola. The one most people start with, and the one most people come back to. The lime keeps it from being cloying.
- Vanilla and cream over root beer. Essentially a root beer float you can drive with.
- Raspberry over lemon-lime. Lighter, no cream, good if the dairy sounds like a step too far.
A tip: ask for less syrup than the default the first time. These run sweet, and it is easier to add than to fix.
Where to get one from us
The Soda Run operates at our Ogden shop only, at 554 Washington Blvd, alongside the donut counter. It is not at Spanish Fork or St. George, and there are no current plans to bring it to them — so if you have been sent to the wrong one, that is why.
What to eat with it
A dirty soda and a savoury kolache is a genuinely good combination — the salt cuts the sweet in a way a donut does not. If you are having a donut anyway, go cake or old fashioned rather than something frosted, or the whole thing becomes sugar on sugar.
