Donuts in St. George, Utah: What to Know Before You Go

St. George is a better donut town than it was two years ago, and more is opening. What most guides leave out is the part that actually decides your morning: what time anything is open. If you are driving to Zion, starting a shift, or getting out before the heat, that is the only variable that really matters.
The opening-time problem
St. George runs early. People hike early, work outside early, and leave for the park early. A lot of the food does not keep up — plenty of places in town do not unlock until 6:00 or 7:00am, which is an hour or two after the people who most want breakfast have already gone.
Our St. George shop opens at 5:00am, Monday through Saturday. Not as a gimmick. The fryers have to be going at three to have a full case at five, and we do that because the five o'clock customer in this town is real.

The Zion timing, specifically
From Brigham Rd to the Springdale park entrance is about forty minutes. Work backwards and the arithmetic is simple: leave the shop by 5:20 and you are at the gate before six, which on a summer morning is the difference between hiking in shade and hiking in full sun.
What travels well for that drive: cake donuts and the large kolaches. Both survive being in a car. A glazed does not really — it is best inside an hour, which is fine in the parking lot and less fine at the trailhead. What is actually worth ordering
Not a ranking — a set of honest recommendations depending on what you came for.
- First time, want the classic — traditional glazed, $1.50. Cheapest thing on the board and the hardest to fake.
- Want crunch and something to chew — old fashioned, $2.50, or a buttermilk bar, $2.75. Both are buttermilk cake donuts fried until the surface splits.
- Want something you cannot get most places — the Persian, $2.75. Large, soft, cinnamon-laced, closer to a cinnamon roll than to a ring donut.
- Actually hungry, not just sweet-hungry — a large kolache, $4.75. Sausage, egg, cheese and potato baked inside the dough.
- Feeding a group — assorted, $22.50 a dozen, and a dozen is buy ten get two free.
Kolaches in southern Utah
This is the genuinely unusual part of our St. George case. Kolaches are a Texas-Czech breakfast item that came up through Houston and Dallas and never really spread west. In Utah they are mostly a Wasatch Front thing. St. George barely has them.
We make them on Brigham Rd: small ones with ham, sausage, cheese and jalapeño combinations from $2.50, and large breakfast ones — bacon egg cheese and potato, sausage egg and gravy, ham ranchero — from $4.75. The afternoon deal
Monday through Thursday, every donut in the case at our St. George and Spanish Fork shops is half price after 2:00pm. Same donuts, same day, fried that morning. On Friday and Saturday St. George closes at two, so the window is Monday to Thursday only.
Worth knowing that the case is thinner by then. What tends to be left late is cake donuts and whatever the morning did not take — which, given that cake donuts are the ones that hold, is not a bad hand to be dealt.
Sunday
We are closed Sunday, and a fair number of places in town are too. If you need a box for Sunday morning, buy Saturday and buy cake rather than raised — cake donuts are noticeably better the next day. Dinner rolls do the same job: frozen by the dozen at $4.95, baked at $6.95.
