Leaving St. George Before Sunrise? Here's Where to Get Breakfast on the Way to Zion

Zion is about forty minutes from St. George. If you want to be at a trailhead for first light, you are pulling out of town around five in the morning — and that is where most breakfast plans fall apart.
The problem with 5am in St. George
Nearly every bakery, coffee shop and breakfast place in St. George opens at six. That is fine if you are having a leisurely morning. It is useless if you are trying to beat the shuttle queue and the heat.
The usual advice is to buy something the night before and eat it in the car. That works, but a service-station pastry that has been sitting overnight is a poor start to a good day.
What we do about it
Our St. George shop at 922 E Brigham Rd opens at 5:00am, Monday through Saturday. The first trays are already out when the doors open, because the baking starts hours before that.
You can be in and out in five minutes with hot coffee and real food, and still be on the road well before sunrise.
What actually travels well
Not everything survives a mountain road. What holds up:
- Large kolaches. Sausage, egg, cheese and potato, or bacon, egg, cheese and potato. Wrapped in dough, so nothing falls out, nothing needs a fork, and they are still good an hour later.
- Cake and old fashioned donuts. Dense enough to sit in a box on a winding road without collapsing.
- Coffee, lidded. Ours comes from Perks, a local roaster.
What does not travel: anything filled with cream, and anything with elaborate frosting. Both are excellent at the counter and a mess in a car.
Ordering ahead
If there are a few of you, order ahead and it will be boxed and waiting. At five in the morning that is the difference between leaving on time and leaving fifteen minutes late. Dozen pricing is buy ten, get two free, which is usually the right call for a group.
A note on timing
Sunrise in southern Utah moves a lot across the year — early as the low sixes in midsummer, past seven-thirty in midwinter. Check the actual sunrise time for your date and work backwards: forty minutes of driving, plus parking and the shuttle. Leaving at five covers most of the year.
