Birthday Donuts Instead of Cake: Why More Utah Families Are Doing It
15 September 2026 · 5 min read
Custom decorated donuts are $3.00 each or $36.00 a dozen, made to order at all three shops. For a child's birthday, a classroom, or an office where somebody turns forty, they solve several problems a cake does not — starting with the fact that nobody has to cut them.
The practical case
A cake needs a knife, plates, forks and somebody willing to serve. Donuts need a box. At a party with children, that difference is not small.
- No cutting, no serving, no plates. People take one and walk away.
- Portions are already solved. Nobody gets a corner piece with all the icing and nobody gets the sad middle slice.
- Leftovers survive. A half-eaten cake is a problem by day two. Leftover donuts get eaten for breakfast.
- Variety in one order. You cannot make half a cake chocolate for the people who do not like vanilla. You can absolutely do that with a dozen donuts.
What we can decorate
Colours to match a theme, icing, sprinkles, drizzle, shapes. We do hearts in February, pastel and Peeps at Easter, green and gold in March, and party colours all year round.
What we cannot do is edible photo printing or intricate sugar work. If the picture in your head is closer to a decorated cake than a decorated donut, we will say so on the phone rather than let you discover it at pickup.
The stacked donut cake
If you want the moment where everyone sings at something, donuts stack. A tower of decorated donuts on a stand, with a candle in the top one, does the same job as a cake and photographs better. Tell us that is what you are doing when you order so we decorate the top one to be the one in the picture.
What it costs
- Custom decorated — $3.00 each, $36.00 a dozen
- Specialty from the case — $2.75 each, $27.50 a dozen
- Glazed — $1.50 each, $15.00 a dozen
Every dozen is buy ten, get two free. A useful middle option: order half custom for the photograph and half glazed for the people who just want a donut. It looks like an occasion and costs considerably less than a fully custom box.
How much notice
A day for a dozen. Two or three days for several dozen or a specific colour scheme. For a weekend party, call by midweek — Saturday mornings are our busiest and the decorating happens around the ordinary morning bake.
